CANBERRA
Canberra is an artificial place.
Canberra is place that has a cbd, rich close suburbs and then a number
of ‘out of sight’ satellite cities. Canberra is also a pretend city
where funds have never ever been an issue to progress development. And
progress it has. Some 50k people in 1950 to over 400k people today.
Just amazing.
The
site of Canberra was selected for the location of the nation's capital
in 1908 as a compromise between rivals Sydney and Melbourne,
Australia's two largest cities.
It is
unusual among Australian cities, being an entirely planned city.
Following an international contest for the city's design, a blueprint
by the Chicago architects Walter Burley Griffin and Marion Mahony
Griffin was selected and construction commenced in 1913. The Griffins'
plan featured geometric motifs such as circles, hexagons and
triangles, and was centred on axes aligned with significant
topographical landmarks in the Australian Capital Territory.
Easy
for the locals to navigate but impossible for a visitor.
As the
city has a high proportion of public servants, the federal government
contributes the largest percentage of Gross State Product and is the
largest single employer in Canberra.
Everything about Canberra is flawless and first rate. Any mistakes are
quickly remedied.
The
following institutions are exceptional
Parliament House
The
War Memorial
The
Museums
The Mint _small.JPG)
Most
of the churches are fantastic given they date early 50’s _small.JPG) _small.JPG)
Any
monuments or structures.
But
the pubs are awful.
Allow
up to a week to enjoy but stay at nearby Queanbeyan.
