STEWART HIGHWAY
Tennant Creek to
Darwin (subject to being updated)
Long distances between ‘watering
holes’ is the endearing feature of the Stewart Highway. Officially
starts in Adelaide and finishes in Darwin, or vice versa. Bustout
joined the Stewart Highway at Tennant Creek. That was after joining
the Barkly Highway at Cloncurry.
The Barkly Highway has its beginnings in Townsville.
Sprinkled along the highway are small
settlements, historic and scenic landmarks,_small.JPG)
and slowly changing vistas.
  These
short stops help makes the trip a little more pleasurable than it
might have been. There is very little traffic so the odd road train
and upcoming landmarks helps to look forward to the next thing.
For us 100k per hour, at 2,500 revs
and cruise control. Then sit back and relax.
After Tennant Creek there are the
Pebbles. Some 5k of gravel to negotiate, but worth the visit.
The Stuart Memorial about 50k north.
The John Flynn Memorial.
Larrimah
is the purple pub and caravan park
and museum
then
the famous Daly Waters Hotel
Elliot is the first small hamlet with
a hotel. Police are based at Elliot.
Newcastle Waters was bypassed when the
‘new’ highway was laid. This now an historic ghost town with a
fabulous tribute the ‘stockman’.
This
alone makes the short diversion worthwhile.
Always give the many Road Trains full
respect._small.JPG)
The Dunmarra Roadhouse
is a recommended stopover. An interesting wall mural
and B52 bomber and road train will most likely be an only time ever
photo to look at.
