LONGREACH
In the minds of most travelers the
name/town of Longreach personifies the outback, history and the
magical, I must visit that place one day. Those perceptions at
Longreach meet with reality. Longreach is a very interesting place. To
visit Longreach in high winter determines one of the outback realities
of very high temperatures is muted and this perhaps less than 10
months of the year actual factual a hot place.
The town lies on the Tropic of Capricorn with a
population of circa 3000. The main industries of the area are cattle,
sheep, and, more recently, tourism.
Increasingly Longreach is on the mass
market tourist agenda. The QANTAS Museum and the Australian Stockman
Heritage Museum, plus the desire to be an armchair outback visitor
being the key drivers.
Longreach is the birthplace of QANTAS
Airways. The second longest operating and single ownership airline in
the world. The QANTAS Museum is at an obvious must visit for visitors.
The 707 plane should be a secondary consideration.
These photos will do the enticing.
The Stockman Museum is a very classy
proposition and should be included in the visitor’s considerations.
The museum and art gallery are the writers recommendations.
Walking the town of Longreach there is
much to appreciate; the rail station and museum, the botanic walk, the
iconic QANTAS offices, the Kinnon & Co department store , and the
Powerhouse Museum.
The Longreach War Memorial is a very
good representation of the Longreach citizen’s participation.
The Catholic Church
is the most formidable in Longreach.
The Longreach hotels are old, but not
heritage considerations as at this time. _small.JPG)
