MARYBOROUGH
Heritage preservation sets a benchmark
at Maryborough. Maryborough is a town to absolute delight in and the main
street, churches, museums, hotels and numerous turn of the century
council and business buildings are in very good hands. What a delight.
Maryborough, a city located on the Mary River in South
East Queensland,
was founded in 1847, was proclaimed a municipality in
1861, and became a city in 1905. During the 1800s, the city was a
major port of entry to immigrants arriving in Queensland from all
parts of the world. Over time the town has been a service town for
many industries including gold mining ,
wool, timber, and sugar.
Maryborough is the
birthplace of P.L.Travers, author of the Mary Poppins books.
Marlborough’s Anglican
Church is a magnificent testament too very an era of ambitious
construction. The bell tower alone boasts 60,000 bricks and the walls
two feet thick._small.JPG)
Maryborough is reprsended with all of the main
denominations
The Anglican church
houses the flags used in the Boar and 1st World Wars and
are fragile exhibits in the church.
The Military Museum is a
credit to Maryborough. The museum is a class act in itself, and the
detail of the displays a credit to the curators. This museum is a must
visit and allow time to absorb the on offer. The Museum area is being
developed into the artistic heart of the city.
In keeping with era of
Marlborough’s earlier development quite a number of hotels continue to
do business. Many with heritage listings.
The Maryborough War
Memorial is located at the Queens Gardens.
Allow plenty of time to
enjoy this great ‘city’ where like Gympie earlier there is lots of
civic pride on display.
