MITCHELL
Mitchell is a small town on the
Worrego Hgy continuing our transit west. Mitchell is circa an hour
west of Roma. Mitchell is named after the discoverer xxxx Mitchell and
is on the banks of the Maranoa River. A real river.
Traveling to Mitchell on the route
from Injune we observed an abundance of wildlife. Roos, emus and some
close encounters with very big eagles.
The town is named after Sir
Thomas Mitchell explorer and Surveyor General of New South Wales, who
explored the area in 1846.In 1854, Edmund Morey established the
property of Mitchell Downs. When the original homestead was
largely destroyed by a flood in 1864, Thomas Close acquired the
building's ruins established the Maranoa Hotel. A post office
operated on Mitchell downs from 1865 and in 1878 the community was
officially named Mitchell.
Mitchell and its residents and
visitors are able to delight in the Artesian Pool. The pool is a
beacon in cold weather and can be quite busy. 39 degrees is the normal
water temp. A coffee, café, internet and gym (plus the spa) ensures
the centre is the catalyst for most.
The bridge over the Maranoa River is a
mural feast. The photos give testimony to this lasting exhibition.
The Mitchell War Memorial is at the
western end of town and is a fitting tribute to the fallen.
The Mitchell Churches are located on
the northern fringe.
The Hotels in Mitchell are grand
and/or historic buildings.

The Mitchell Museum is in the early
days of formation. Given time this will be a great exhibition.
Mitchell is another great small Qld
town that deserves an extended visit.
