CRYSTAL BROOK
Crystal Brook is the next town
encounted if traveling south towards Adelaide. Crystal Brook is also
another by-pass town, but has not suffered to badly from an economic
perspective. Crystal Brook is also a crossroads town. The township is
very attractive and heritage controls and information are well
managed. There is plenty to enjoy in Crystal Brook and a stopover
should be a consideration.
The
Crystal Brook (or creek) supplied water to the town until 1890 when
the Beetaloo Reservoir was completed, which at the time was the
largest concrete dam in the southern hemisphere.
Crystal Brook is
situated on Goyder's Line near the border of two climate systems.
While apparently cold semi-arid, the town benefits from a temperate
Mediterranean climate zone near to the east, making possible slightly
more intense farming in the region. To the west and north-west lies
some marginal, semi-arid farmland. The local farming community is
still able to support many small businesses in the town.
The Crystal
Brook Museum is located near the cbd. This museum gives a great
insight into the history of this small town.
The two Crystal
Brook Hotels are over 100 years old and the classic corner pub.
The churches in
Crystal Brook likewise are over 100 years old but well spread.
The
Lutheran being modern.
The Catholic is unsigned and is near the hospital.
The Crystal
Brook War Memorial is in various formats at the western approach to
the town.
There is much to
enjoy at this great small town.
