PORT PIRIE
Port Pirie is a destination or stay
over city. Time to take breath or time to restock. Although an
industrial city, Port Pirie is also a tourism beach resort type place.
Port Pirie is clean. Not only is Port Pirie heritage proud, the
visitor will find the city very clean. Including the seawater that
surrounds the town.
Being an industrial steel producing hub the small city has a degree of
helter/skelter but that adds to the charm of the place. Visitors more
often than not will have a great time at Port Pirie.
The
settlement was founded in 1845. The town was originally called
Samuel's Creek after the discovery of Muddy Creek by Samuel Germein.
In 1846, Port Pirie Creek was named by Governor Robe after the John
Pirie, the first vessel to navigate the creek when transporting
sheep from Bowman's Run near Crystal Brook
Port
Pirie is the site of the world's largest lead smelter operator. Port
Pirie also produces refined silver, zinc, copper and gold.
The 202 metre ‘smoke stack’ is
one of the tallest in the world.

Along with the other magnificently preserved buildings. This is the
heritage quarter of the port.     
The Catholic Church (nearly cathedral)
is the most modern of the main denominations.
The Anglican
is well over 100 years old. The United likewise.
Barnacle Bill being a reminder of
faith/ commercial relevance.
The traveler will find there is a lot
to delight and enjoy at Port Pirie. For those that stay at the ‘by the
shore’ caravan park you will be also entertained by the 8 am swimmer/
opera for about 30 minutes as he swims by each day. Enjoy Port Pirie.
