NORSEMAN
Before entering Norseman from
the south the
traveler will pass some very picturesque salt lakes.
Norseman is midway between Esperance
and Kalgoolie, junction town and the gateway to the Nullarbor Plain.
The town though small has all of the essential services and is an
essential stock/fill up location.
Gold has been mined continuously at
Norseman since 1896.
The
quest for gold led to the establishment of Norseman. Today there are a
number of small gold mining operations in the area but only the
Central Norseman Gold Corporation can be considered a major producer.
Gold was first found in the Norseman area in 1892 about 10 km south of
the town, near Dundas, and the "Dundas Field" was proclaimed in August
1893 and a town site gazetted there.
In
July 1894, Lawrence Sinclair and his horse "Norseman" discovered a
rich gold reef which Sinclair named for his horse.

Once
it was the second-richest goldfield in Western Australia, next to the
Golden Mile of Kalgoolie. It is claimed that since 1892, over 100
tonnes of gold have been extracted from the area.

Norseman is also a participating town
in the ‘golf’ Nullarbor Links Course. The longest Golf Course in the
world. Norseman has 14th and 15th holes.
There are two museums in Norseman.
The Norseman Hotel is classic pub
design.
The Norseman War Memorial is different
and colourful on the main highway.
The Catholic Church has character.
The All Saints is in the back streets.
A stopover at Norseman will not be
hard to take.
