KAWHIA
Kawhia is definitely one of those locations that is well and truly
‘off the beaten track’. Highway 31 is the designation route to Kawhia
and is about 120 k southwest of Hamilton. Kawhai is some 50k south of
Raglan. Unlike Raglan that is a surfing and café town, Kawhia is
primaril y
a fishing destination and there are a number of websites that are
available to gather further information.
Kawhia ocean beach is described as “Another
priceless treas ure
of not only the Kawhia region, but of New Zealand, is the stunningly
beautiful, Kawhia ocean beach”
Kawhia is also a town that has all the traditional services, including
a number of churches.
Kawhia also has a museum that is open most days. Although not local or
of NZ origin the museum boasts an exhibition of Australian shells.
The Kawhia museum also doubles as the Kawhia Information Centre.

Given the nearby hot
springs we recommend a stay over at Kawhia, and although a long drive
to take the coast road to the Waitomo Caves. Along the way there are
two 'must take a look' views. Firstly the
stunning Marakopo
Falls and later the incredible Mangapohu Natural Bridge.
