MANAKAU
Manakau is a small town 15 km’s south
of Levin. This is a typical by-pass town because all of Manakau proper
is over the single entry rail line to the east of the highway. Manakau
is a township that has been around for a long time and features in
heritage data.
The streets of Manakau are of an
earlier era and remain narrow and tree-lined. Manakau is a quite
pretty place and if the timing is right a beverage at the Manakau
Hotel may be a consideration.
The Manakau Church is also a heritage
building.
Manakau has a War Memorial. To imagine
that nearly one hundred years ago this so very small community
contributed to the Great War. But importantly to this day the War
Memorial just over from the Hotel remains a reminder even for this
community the sacrifices that were made.
