OTOROHANGA
Otorohanga is one of those small country towns that are determined to
have an impact in both the region, but also NZ. The town is on the
main route to the busy Waitomo Caves and has the very successful Kiwi
House, but has also again successfully, tied the town to all things
Kiwi. i.e. the Kiwi Capital of New Zealand. Kiwiana is king.
It is a service town for the surrounding dairy farming district. The
population is circa 2,800.
The treatment Otorohanga has given Kiwi Hero’s and Events are
displayed in an arcade and deserves a look-over.
The treatment of the War Memorial is first rate.
Otorohanga is also a commute town to the busier Te Awamutu and
Hamilton.
Otorohanga is also on the main north/south rail trunk line.
And off the web the following:-
‘In 1986 the town briefly changed its name to "Harrodsville”. With
full support of the District Council, Otorohanga "officially" changed
the town's name to "Harrodsville" The "send up" raised wide-spread
media interest around the world. The BBC world service covering the
event, and newspapers in Greece, Saudi Arabia, Australia and Canada
giving illustrated coverage.’
