PICTON
For all travelers going by ‘road’ to
the South Island pass through Picton. Ferry in and ferry out .
Most times the Ferry trip is uneventful, but there have in times past
been exceptions to the rule.
30 years ago Picton was the transitory
town from which the Sth Island excursion began. Picton addressed that
need with the necessary services. Today Picton is a vibrant tourist
and recreational centre in its own right. Not a Queenstown or Taupo as
yet, but on the way.
Picton is also a Wellington ‘money’
town and Picton's real growth is being funded by this recreational and
investment dollar. Property, shopping and lifestyle investments are on
a steep growth curve. (Wellington’s secret)
The township of Waikawa is
a couple of minutes' drive from Picton, practically part of the same
town. Waikawa hosts a marina, one of the largest in New Zealand
Tourism is also keen to explore the
‘sounds’ like never before. Picton is a boon town and being just three
‘cheap’ travels and relaxing hours from Wellington will continue to
grow.
The town is named after Sir
Thomas Picton, the military associate of the Duke of Wellington, who
was killed at the Battle of Waterloo.
The Picton
Museum
gives
a good insight to the early history of the town. The maritime museum
is also worth a good look.
The Picton War Memorial has
a high profile overlooking the sounds. Poignant also.
Picton has two ‘old’
churches
plus
a modern offering.
The Hotels on Picton’s old
waterfront have given way to some classy upgraded offerings plus the
traditional taverns.
Picton is a great town to
visit and stay. Allow days to enjoy.
