TAPANUI
Tapanui is the third town on the
Winton to Dunedin back roads route. Tapanui is a small town also but
is clearly a progressive little place. This evident by the services
that are on offer and there is a bustle about the place.
Tapanui is a picturesque
town close to the boundary with Southland region.
Tapanui is a forestry town,
and lies between the foot of the Blue Mountains. Deer stalking and
trout fishing are popular pastimes of the area.
For almost a hundred
years, the town was serviced by the Tapanui Branch railway line, which
despite its name never actually terminated in Tapanui.
Tapanui does not have a
cenotaph but the fallen have good presence in the RSA and possibly the
Lawrence War Memorial.
The Catholic and Anglican
Church have good profiles.
Tapanui has a museum that
opens on weekends.
When travelling through be
sure to stop for lunch at this very pretty town.
