TURANGI
Turangi is one of the Trout Fishing
‘capitols’ of New Zealand. Turangi is a relatively new town that was
developed with the power station construction during early nineteen
fifties. Turangi also is stop off point for those visitors and
tourists seeking to explore Lake Taupo and the walks and tracks at the
Tongariro National Park, just to the north.
Tourism and forestry is the
mainstay of the community with the Department of Corrections two
prisons, Genesis Energy, the Department of Conservation and farming
being the main employers.
The town was designed to remain as a small servicing
centre for the exotic forest plantations south of Lake Taupo and for
tourists but the town has struggled economically in the recent decade.
Recent times have seen a spurt of growth and Turangi now has a buzz
about it.
The War Memorial is located at the Turangi RSA.
The Catholic Church
is
a great modern building and the United Church is also a grand
building.

The Turangi Hotel is a modern structure with bars and
restaurants.
