WHITE ISLAND
We knew when we set out on this project we would see and experience some pretty special stuff. White Island is one such event. This is a world class experience and highly recommended. This not Rotorua or Mount Ruapehu. This an active volcanic vent that at the moment is rated 2 on the factor of 10 for an eruption. The beauty of this active volcano is it is at sea level, and relatively inexpensive to get too. The boat trip and Island visit is 6.5 hour excursion.
White Island was so named by Captain Cook in 1769; ‘white’ probably because of the white clouds around it.
White Island has for most of its European era been a sulpher mine. The miners went into receivership in the 1930’s and the island was bought by the xxx family, hence being privately owned.
We will let this small selection (of many) of photographs tell the story.
On our way back and nearly every time the captain knows just the spot for a dolphin show.
What a day
